Synopsis:
Behind the Brush: Portraits of Influence uncovers the lives of three remarkable Mori tpuna whose histories survived through the portraits of Gottfried Lindauer. Once hidden away in private collections and family archives, these paintings now offer new insight into identity, ambition and the cultural transformation of Aotearoa.
The episode revisits the legacy of a respected chief who played a central role in the founding of the town of Foxton, navigating both Mori leadership and colonial expansion. Alongside him is the story of a Mori woman whose celebrated beauty drew the attention of European royalty, revealing the complex intersections of fascination, representation and status. Completing the trio is a visionary leader who championed the idea of a Mori parliament, imagining new political structures for Mori self-determination during a rapidly changing era.
Through descendants reflections and close attention to Lindauers artistic detail, the portraits emerge as more than historical likenesses. They become visual archives of aspiration, charisma and cultural memory preserving stories that continue to resonate far beyond the canvas.
